Disclaimer: please be aware all my cooking recipes are typical somali(as ayeeyo used to make it)

LESSON1: how to boil an EGG

Steps:
1. Place the egg in a saucepan.

2. Run cold water into the saucepan until the water is 1 inch above the egg.

3. Place the saucepan on a stove and cook over medium heat until the water begins to boil.

4. Reduce the heat to low.

5. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes for soft-boiled eggs or 10 to 15 minutes for hard-boiled eggs.

6. Remove the egg with a spoon or ladle and let it cool slowly, or run cold water over it to cool it more quickly.

TIPS:

-To easily distinguish between boiled and raw eggs, spin the egg in question on your countertop. A boiled egg will spin for ages, but an uncooked egg will barely make it once around.

gabdho iyo wiilal before we start our first cooking lesson i think it is vital we know how to set a table properly. below is an illustration of simple dinner table Wink if you fancy anything of grand scale i would suggest you buy books by martha steward, delia smith or nigelia lawson

1) To set a basic table, you will need a dinner plate, glass, knife, fork, spoon and napkin

2) Place the dinner plates one inch from the edge of the table. If there is a pattern in the middle of the plate, make sure that it is right side.(somalis like alabta sharxan Smile )

3) Place the knife on the right side of the plate, blade inward, one inch from the edge of the table, handle end of knife at the bottom

4) The tablespoon is placed next to the knife, also one inch from the bottom of the table

5) The fork is place on the left side of the dinner plate one inch from the edge of the table

6)The napkin is folded in half and placed next to the fork with the crease farthest away from the fork

7)The glass is placed directly above the knife approximately one inch

please note* centrepieces such as A bouquet of flowers, a ceramic object, fruit, salt & pepper shakers can make your table seem elegent, fun and festive, so add one or two of the above mentioned to provide a joyful mood Wink

goodluck, now go and practice proper table setting.

ps:does anyone need instruction of how to use cutlery correctly? for lefthanders different rules apply

Malawax

Oky What you wanna do

To make about 15-20 malawax, you'll need a few ingredients and utensils:

Ingredients:

2eggs
¼ teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
2 ¼ milk
¼ cup (½ stick) melted butter or margarine or oil

Utensils
A whisk, wooden spoon, fork, electric mixer, or eggbeater
A bowl to mix the malawax batter
Plastic spatula
8 inch non-stick skillet
A tupperware to store leftover bater

Three ways you can mix this. Ala old style with laddle, blender or mixing machine.

I prefer Blender
add all of the ingrediants together and blend it. Make sure that the mixture of the malax doesn't become tooo watery other wise it will be hard to cook it. Oky if ever it become watery or too sticky you can either or add more water so make it liquider or add more flour to make it pour cookable.

Utensils

Put the pan on the stove make sure that the level of the pan or the non stick skillet pan is medium not too hot not too cold. It should be medium.

Spray a oil sprayer on the pan or take a teaspoon of oil and pour it on the pan. Wipe it all over the pan.

When you see the pan ready. Take the soup spoon and pour the pastry on to the pan. Try to make it in a circle so it looks like a pancake. Wait like 20 or 30 seconds until the you see that it turned golden and then turn it around. Wait for 10 secs for the other side cook and then take little bit of oil meaning half or even little than that of a teaspoon, take the teaspoon and rub it on the batch. move it around meaning side to side, unti it all turn golden brown depends on how you like it. take offthe pan put it on a plate then on your next one. Although all the time the first one doesn't turn out good. Because the pan needs to get a feel of it. You can either put a little dust of sugar or not depends on the person. Most of the time people like to eat with with suqaar.

I tell everyone that says they can't cook, if you can read you can cook. If you can't read, then I guess you can't cook. Anyone who can read a recipe can cook. Hence, my sister Dawoco, can cook, but just too lazy to cook. Razz

I learned to cook so young that my mother turned the kitchen over to me completely when I was 11. Having older brothers who would bring home umpteen teenage boys every day, who could only say 2 words "We're hungry" taught me to even cook in mass. But, my mother told me to never let a man know you can cook, L0L or he will never take you out to dinner again.
